The Elements Know
🔥 The fire doesn't ask if it's warm enough.
💧 The water doesn't pause mid-current to wonder if it's needed.
🌍 The earth doesn't question whether it can hold what's been planted in it.
🌬️ And the air simply moves, unseen, trusting that every living thing will find it and breathe.
None of the elements audition for their place in this world. They don't perform their worth or apologize for taking up space. They simply are, and in their being, they give exactly what they were always going to give.
I don't think it's a coincidence that we call it "the natural world." Because somewhere along the way, most of us stopped trusting that this is natural for us too.
We carry all four of them, just in different form.

💧 Water in nature carves canyons, feeds roots, and softens the hardest stone not through force, but through consistency. In us, water shows up as emotion: the part that feels, releases, and moves through whatever it meets. Tarot calls this suit Cups: emotion, intuition, connection.
🔥 Fire in nature clears old growth so new growth has room, giving warmth and light without keeping score of who deserves it. In us, fire is will and instinct; the spark that turns a feeling into an action. Tarot calls this suit Wands: passion, drive, momentum.
🌍 Earth holds every seed regardless of what it will grow into, steady beneath both flood and drought. In us, earth is the physical body itself: the part that stays, that carries everything else, that needs rest and nourishment to keep holding the rest of us up. Tarot calls this suit Pentacles: the body, resources, the tangible world we build with our hands.
🌬️ Air carries pollen, seed, and scent across distances that would otherwise keep things apart. In us, air is breath and thought: the mind, the nervous system, the space where ideas take shape. Tarot calls this suit Swords: clarity, and sometimes, overthinking.
None of the elements do their job occasionally, or only when they feel ready. It's simply what they're for. And when all four move together in us the same way, we feel like ourselves: clear-minded, warm, grounded, and able to feel without getting lost in it.
It's when one of them runs the whole show that we feel it. All fire and no earth looks like burning through idea after idea with nothing ever landing or lasting. All water and no fire looks like feeling everything deeply and still staying stuck, circling the same emotion without ever moving into action. All air and no earth looks like understanding yourself beautifully in theory, with no ground to actually live it from. Balance was never about all four being equal all the time, it’s about none of them being ignored.
This is often where our sense of purpose gets complicated.
So many of us are walking around asking the same quiet question: what am I here for? Do I matter? Where do I belong? And often the answer we're handed is that we simply need more faith, more belief, more surrender to something outside of us.
I don't think that's the whole truth. Believing in something greater doesn't automatically hand you your purpose. Neither does being loved by the right person, or finally being understood by the right group. I've noticed — for myself and in watching others — that when we look outside ourselves for the reason we exist, we can search for a lifetime and still come up quietly unsatisfied. The thing we're looking for was never going to be found out there. It's cultivated in here, through the elements already living in us.
That cultivation isn't a finish line, and it doesn't ask us to stop growing, healing, or questioning. If anything, it's the opposite: the more we get to know ourselves. The more willing we are to look honestly at our patterns and keep evolving, the clearer our sense of purpose naturally becomes. Growth isn't a detour from finding out who we are. It's usually how we find out.
I learned this slowly, through a pattern I kept repeating.
For a long time, whenever I shared my views on life, relationships, or what I valued, I was speaking from air without earth: full of thought, with no ground underneath it. I wanted people to tell me I wasn't wrong for thinking the way I did, for wanting what I wanted. Underneath that was a quiet fear of being cast out, of ending up alone in my own perspective.
People met that energy accordingly. Some heard my sharing as an invitation to convince me otherwise. Some held up a mirror to every insecurity I hadn't yet worked through. Some stayed close because they saw me as something broken that needed fixing.
Then something shifted. I started speaking from earth instead of air; grounded instead of afraid. Sharing what was true for me because it was true, not because I needed anyone to agree. The responses changed too. Some people pushed back harder. Some tried to pull me back into the old shape. Some quietly stepped away. And the people who saw the world in a similar way, or were simply open to hearing it, stayed or found their way back.
Nothing about what I believed had changed. What changed was the ground I was standing on when I said it.
Like fire, water, earth, and air, we were never meant to prove our worth before we were allowed to give it. The more we come home to each of these parts of ourselves, the less we need the world outside to confirm what's already true within.
If you're curious what your own elemental balance looks like right now, or want support exploring it more deeply, I'd love to hold space for that with you.
